Windshield Wiper Maintenance

Routine car maintenance usually conjures up images of oil changes and tire rotations, but maintaining your vehicle to last for years and to drive safely means a lot more than that. It means replacing air filters and testing your battery and washing and waxing your car. It means replacing lights and spark plugs, as well as taking care of your vehicle's windshield wipers. Here's how to properly maintain windshield wiper blades.

Replace as needed

While we will share tips on increasing the longevity of your blades, the most crucial advice we have is to replace them when it's time. When your wiper blades leave smears and streaks that decrease visibility, it is crucial for your safety that you replace them. You can check them yourself for signs of wear - from rain and snow, as well as exposure to UV radiation from the sun. If you see cracking or discoloration, it is time to replace them.

Clean regularly

To prolong the life of your wiper blades, remember to wipe them down every three months. These blades build up with grime and dirt over time, which can corrode the blade's rubber and leave unwanted smears. Just take a clean cloth to the blade delicately to remove dirt and grime.

Protect blades

About twice a year (each fall and each spring), add a rubber protectant to your wiper blades. First, prep them for the protectant by wiping them down as you do every three months. However, this time use white vinegar for extra cleaning power. Then apply a rubber protectant (that you can find at an auto parts store) with a clean cloth.

Switch out blades

If you want to get the most out of your wiper blades, you can buy more premium brands meant to last longer. You can also purchase blades that are ideal for summer and ideal for winter and swap them out as the seasons change.
